On Sunday, Sept. 2, Berkeley’s Brazilian cultural center Casa de Cultura hosts a festival marking Brazilian Independence Day with its 14th annual Lavagem celebration. The event opens in the morning with free dance classes and features performances on the main stage beginning at 11 a.m.; the Lavagem procession and blessing take place at 2 p.m. This year’s musical roster features a stellar cast of musicians, including an all-star ensemble gleaned from the faculty of just-concluded Brazil Camp with guitar great Alessandro Penezzi, mandolin master Danilo Brito, cavaquinho expert Alessandro Cardoso and percussionist Brian Rice. Other acts include Maracatu Pacifico, with special guest percussionist Pitoco de Airá (from the city of Recife, another vital northeastern center of Afro-Brazilian culture), Santa Cruz samba band SambaDá, Xaxado Mission with special guest Vitor Gonçalves on accordion and vocalist Catia Lund.

Tex Allen, a 13-year Burner, doubts many newcomers to the playa are reading those. The festival’s on-site Sexual Assault Services department receives five and 20 reports of alleged sexual assault each year, said Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham. Many of those reports involve leering or grabbing, which aren’t considered sexual assault under Nevada law. A few reports each year require involvement from law enforcement. Last year, two people were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault without substantial bodily harm.

Watson said her group was founded in 2005 after a woman was sexually assault at the festival the previous year. The camp, which is not a part of the Burning Man organization, tapes posters inside port-a-potties that define consent. The group also passes out buttons with slogans such as “Consent is sexy” and “However you dress, wherever you go, yes means yes and no means no.”. The camp has begun to visit other camps, especially those that host large dance parties, and teach them about consent.

In most cultures, dance doesn’t exist as a creative realm separate from music. Rather, synchronizing movement and sound is an inextricably linked endeavor that’s experienced as an indivisible creation. While various modern and post-modern Western dance practices sundered the connection (see: Cunningham, Merce) or did away with music entirely (Judson Dance Theater, I’m looking at you), contemporary choreographers seem more eager than ever to work directly with composers and musicians. The fall dance season is rife with major productions that hinge on musicians and dancers sharing the same space in real time, created by choreographers and players devoted to expanding opportunities for these synergistic collaborations. Jazz, chamber music and pop are all grist for dancemakers looking for the frisson of live interaction on stage. Three of the following programs will offer that thrill.
