After 20 years, Steve Bernstein’s uproarious Sexmob has lost none of its volatile potency. Long before The Bad Plus started turning heads with extravagantly imaginative versions of grunge hits and disco anthems, the Berkeley-reared Bernstein was tearing up a century of American popular music with his smeary slide trumpet, rendering signature songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Brown and Abba with improvisational panache and emotional commitment. Joined by saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen, Sexmob’s founding members, Bernstein wields his slide trumpet like a sonic light saber, dissecting and reassembling tunes to uncover their fundamental elements.

The band opens its California run with concerts expanding on the 2013 album “Cinema, Circus & Spaghetti Sexmob Plays Fellini: The Music of Nino Rota” (Royal Potato Family), playing the beloved film themes Sept, 12 at Kuumbwa and Sept, 13 at SFJazz’s Joe handmade antique ivory satin ballet slippers - split soles Henderson Lab, The quartet then turns its attention to the vast and sensuous body of music by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on two Sept.14 SFJazz shows, And on Sept, 15 and 16, also at SFJazz, Bernstein unleashes a West Coast version of his Millennial Territory Orchestra, a band he launched to explore the rough-and-ready music played by dance bands that crisscrossed the Midwest and Southwest during the 1920s and ’30s..

“Mamma Mia!” is a savvy choice to open Center Repertory Company’s theatrical season at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts, because it’s a hugely popular jukebox musical that hasn’t yet saturated the local market. Featuring the sturdily catchy 1970s dance hits of ABBA, it’s a sure crowd-pleaser largely unimpeded by a thin storyline that sets up the songs somewhat awkwardly. The musical originally opened on the West End in 1999 and made its U.S. debut at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre the following year before making its way to Broadway. After the star-studded film version in 2008, now there’s even a similarly celeb-powered movie sequel in cinemas, titled “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” because it would practically be a crime if it were named anything else.

More than most productions, the Center Rep one really accentuates the fun of a musical that’s all about celebration, Director Marc Jacobs and an awfully strong cast make it marvelously funny wherever possible, abetted by comical choreography by Robyn Tribuzi and some delightfully over-the-top costumes by Maggi Yule, In the musical’s wispy book handmade antique ivory satin ballet slippers - split soles by Catherine Johnson, bride-to-be Sophie wants to invite her father to her wedding but has no idea who her father is because her mother, Donna, won’t talk about it, Getting hold of her mother’s old diary from her free-spirit youth in the late 1970s, Sophie decides to invite all three of the guys Donna mentions having sex with about nine months before Sophie was born, Then it’s just a matter of trying to figure out which of them is her biological father without anyone catching on to what she’s doing..
