Nina Ball’s scenic design aptly conveys the music-biz vibe with a glitzy concert hall marquee with a smaller matching marquee nestled within it, with hand-rotated sets within the smaller one. Adding to the period flair are Bethany Deal’s flashy matching costumes for the various singing groups, accentuated by Lexie Lazear’s wigs. At a time when biographical jukebox musicals have become common, often straining to construct a cohesive narrative out of various pop acts’ careers, it’s also a treat to go back to a story fictionalized enough to constitute a relatively sturdy if simple dramatic arc.

The main thing that makes the show so refreshing, however, is how much Krieger and Eyen’s songs feel less like Broadway fare than like forgotten 1960s R&B hits, No matter how many times you’ve heard “And I Am Telling You I’m Not cobalt blue bridal ballerina slipper, royal blue bridal ballet shoes, blue flat wedding shoes, blue satin wedding ballet slipper Going” used as an audition piece on TV talent shows, for instance, it remains one heck of a showstopper, delivered here by Baptiste with emotionally ragged rawness, (Although some later large-scale revivals such as the still-running London production have reportedly added the song “Listen” created for the 2006 movie, this one does not.)..

The cast and small orchestra conducted by music director Michael Patrick Wiles make even minor numbers by soon-forgotten rival vocal groups feel vital and electric. With smooth moves and fiery vocals, Berkeley Playhouse’s lively production is by and large a delightful dream. Contact Sam Hurwitt at shurwitt@gmail.com, and follow him at Twitter.com/shurwitt. By Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger, presented by Berkeley Playhouse. Through: Oct. 21. Where: Julia Morgan Theater, 2640 College Ave., Berkeley.

As a polymathic artist with a confounding array of musical outlets, Nitin Sawhney has made his presence felt in the Bay Area, even from a distance, Among the most influential British musicians of his generation, the multi-instrumentalist has created music for dozens of television shows, commercials and films, cobalt blue bridal ballerina slipper, royal blue bridal ballet shoes, blue flat wedding shoes, blue satin wedding ballet slipper including Mira Nair’s adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s “The Namesake.” He composed the orchestral scores for the Ninja Theory video games starring Andy Serkis, “Heavenly Sword” and “Enslaved: Odyssey to the West,” and has written music for stars such as Paul McCartney, Sting, A.R, Rahman, Brian Eno, Shakira, and Anoushka Shankar..

Deeply involved in composing for dance, he’s inextricably linked to choreographer Akram Khan via numerous collaborations like “Until the Lions,” which Stanford Live presented last year. And while he performs at major venues around the world, Sawhney’s most recent Northern California appearance was back in 2012 as part of the Stern Grove Festival’s 75th season on a double bill with Meshell Ndegeocello. But his distance from the Bay Area is about to dissipate. Stanford Live has designed a proper, albeit overdue in-person Bay Area introduction for Sawhney with a week-long residency that kicks off Sept. 29 in Bing Concert Hall with “A Musical Life.” Joined by vocalist Eva Stone and Aref Durvesh on tabla, Sawhney has designed the evening as an intimate musical encounter in which storytelling and musical performances illustrate different chapters and facets of his life.

“It’s quite anecdotal, quite improvised,” said Sawney, 54, from Sadler’s Wells, the London theater where he’s long served as an artist-in-residence, “I can dip in and out of different perspectives, cobalt blue bridal ballerina slipper, royal blue bridal ballet shoes, blue flat wedding shoes, blue satin wedding ballet slipper I’m going to talk and see what emerges, There’s no agenda, other than sharing and literally being in the moment.”, It’s a discursive presentation that might include a Hindustani raga, an original song, a piece of a film score, or a story about his early career as a standup comic and acid jazz musician, “I might have a rhythmic conversation with Arik using Indian classical technique, or tell an anecdote about coincidences in my life related to music,” he says, “I’ve got some clips of films I scored, I’m into lots of different topics, theoretical physics and math, I can talk about their connections with music.”..

In other words, with the Stanford residency Sawhney has landed in just the right place, a connection he attributes to Stanford Live Executive Director Chris Lorway, who as founding artistic director of the Luminato Festival brought Sawhney to Toronto as a 2008 artist-in-residence. Sawhney offers a taste of his musical range at a Stanford students-only DJ set Oct. 5 at the Cantor Arts Center, a role he doesn’t get to play very often. “But I love it because I live and breathe music,” Sawhney said. “I play flamenco guitar. I’ve played in funk and jazz quartets. I’ve had the Indian classical background. I’ve worked with Oumou Sangaré, Imogen Heap and Joss Stone. There are so many different experiences I can dip into.”.

The emotional centerpiece of his Bay Area stay is the U.S, premiere of “Dystopian Dream” Oct, 4-5 in Memorial Auditorium, Co-commissioned with cobalt blue bridal ballerina slipper, royal blue bridal ballet shoes, blue flat wedding shoes, blue satin wedding ballet slipper Sadler’s Wells by Stanford Live, the production is a collaboration with the acclaimed hip-hop dance duo Honji Wang and Sébastien Ramirez (who presented their Wang Ramirez Company work “Monchichi” in Bing Studio last February), Featuring animated projections by Nick Hillel, aerial dance and Shizuka Hariu’s arresting set design, the 75-minute piece evolved out of Sawhney’s experience with grief after his father’s death..
