A hot summer night in Livermore might seem like a counterintuitive setting for a play called “The Winter’s Tale,” but this particular work of William Shakespeare is odd to begin with. The first half is over-the-top tragedy while the second half is breezy pastoral comedy. That curious disconnect between what happens in Sicilia before intermission and in Bohemia afterward is only accentuated in Livermore Shakespeare Festival’s outdoor production on the tasteful grounds of Wente Vineyards. After a somewhat awkward exposition scene, artistic director Lisa A. Tromovitch’s staging starts strongly as the situation in Sicilia very quickly falls apart.

Having asked his old friend King Polixenes of Bohemia in vain to extend his visit, King Leontes urges his wife to convince him to stay, When she succeeds, Leontes watches the very pregnant Queen Hermione chatting pleasantly with his friend and suddenly convinces himself (skipping over mere suspicion entirely) that they must be having an affair, Aaron Murphy is an entertainingly volatile and maddeningly insecure Leontes, funny at times in just how bullheadedly wrongheaded he is in pretty ballerina digital paper ballet watercolor swan handpainted floral seamless patterns ballet shoes feather crown silver pink glitt much everything he does, with terrible consequences for all concerned, Sarah Traisman is a wonderfully charismatic and playful Hermione, though never in a way that makes it seem like Leontes actually has any grounds for his mad jealousy (especially when you consider what a guileless and benign Polixenes Malcolm Rodgers is), and she’s rivetingly potent in her righteous fury..

Caitlin Evenson is formidable in her own right as Hermione’s fierce advocate Paulina, while Alan Coyne is glumly dutiful as her husband, Antigonus, charged with disposing of the baby that Leontes disowns. Future seventh grader Shaurya Guleria is a sweetly willful little prince as the royal couple’s son Mamillius, and Michael Wayne Rice is an amiable, slow-talking Camillo, the king’s conscientious advisor. The trouble is, at seen in a preview performance, this first part of the production is much stronger than the second. The performances aren’t as strong in the latter half, and the comedy is somewhat limp among the bewildered shepherds, disguised royals and one thieving rogue. The lighting was also going haywire during the preview, but that’s an easier thing to sort out.

In this rustic section too there are bright spots, Cast as the cheery Perdita, the unsuspecting princess of Sicilia raised by Bohemian shepherds, Avanthika Srinivasan has a great deal of training in traditional Indian music and dance, so Tromovitch incorporates somewhat of an Indian aesthetic into the land of Bohemia, reflected in Jennifer Barker’s costumes as well as a delightful Kolattam folk dance with sticks, choreographed and sung by Srinivasan, The play contains what may be theater’s most famous stage direction, “Exit, pursued by a bear,” and Tromovitch’s take on the bear is both unconventional and haunting, appearing to ballerina digital paper ballet watercolor swan handpainted floral seamless patterns ballet shoes feather crown silver pink glitt be more of a compassionate spirit than a rampaging predator, (We still hear at length about the bear eating a guy, though, which somewhat dispels that impression.)..

It’s a strange situation when a return to the dramatic gloom of Shakespeare’s Sicilia provides a welcome respite from the lackadaisical merriment of Bohemia. Under those broad headings, the factors that seem to make the San Jose residents come off as calm and collected are that compared to the rest of the country, San Joseans get a lot of sleep, don’t work long hours (38 per week, according to the survey) and have a lot of job security.
