Founded some three decades ago by Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) seems to reveal new depth with each California trip. Under the direction of the Pulitzer Prize-winning trumpet star, the talent-laden (but still all-male) group pursues many different creative missions at an exceptionally high level. Over the coming days, the 15-piece ensemble plays various dates around the region, starting with Friday’s headlining set at the Monterey Jazz Festival. The show centers on the orchestra’s collaboration with innovative Memphis dancer Charles “Lil Buck” Riley (whose jookin moves went viral in a cell phone video shot by director Spike Jonze) and tap and hip-hop dance master Jared Grimes, a major force on Broadway. Lil Buck and Grimes also join the JLCO at UC Davis’ Jackson Hall on Sept. 22 and Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall on Sept. 26 for the West Coast premiere of Marsalis’ “Spaces,” an evening-length, 10-movement suite in which each piece evokes a different animal and the environment it inhabits.
The centerpiece of the orchestra’s Bay Area run takes place Sunday at the Greek Theater, where Cal Performances kicks off the 2018-19 season, Joined by Jon Batiste, the New Orleans piano star and leader of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” house band, the JLCO celebrates 50% off us size 6/blue shoe/velvet shoe/gold embroidered designer shoes/blue ballet flats/women shoes/wedding shoes//roya the legacy of Duke Ellington, That’s a vast universe of music, and with Batiste, the orchestra covers growling Cotton Club-era jungle classics, sumptuous ballads and pieces gleaned from the maestro’s ambitious late-career suites..
The Greek performance tops off a busy day on campus that starts with a Cal Performances-produced seminar introducing Bay Area middle and high school students to Ellingtonia via the musicians in the UC Jazz Ensembles. Coordinated by Oakland School for the Arts’ Nicholas Kanozik and Dave Ellis, the program of workshops and side-by-side performances focusing on student mentors guiding younger musicians is inspired by Venezuela’s acclaimed El Sistema music education program. As part of its 25th anniversary season, Smuin Ballet invited acclaimed choreographer Trey McIntyre to re-stage his work “Blue Until June,” set to songs sung by the incomparable singer Etta James, It should be a definite must-see when the company brings its Dance Series 01 to Walnut Creek and San Francisco beginning this weekend (the same program comes to Carmel and Mountain View in February), McIntyre says he doesn’t buy into any romantic notions about love, “I was thinking about how much our idea, in America especially, of what love is supposed to be is informed by music,” says the choreographer, “And what a messed up version that is and why we have so many bad ways of being, Her songs are 50% off us size 6/blue shoe/velvet shoe/gold embroidered designer shoes/blue ballet flats/women shoes/wedding shoes//roya full of that, About longing for limerence and completion of yourself with another person, and things that aren’t good, So I developed this idea of people who were just stewing in that longing and bitterness and disappointment.”..
Costumes by Sandra Woodall also reflect McIntyre’s sentiments. “The women are in long silky dresses and the men is shirts and pants because clothes show how we are and interact as people. They are faded and worn like they are stuck in the past,” he notes. The program also includes Michael Smuin’s “Eternal Idol” and “Schubert Scherzo” and new works by current and past company members Nicole Haskins, Ben Needham-Wood and Rex Wheeler. Details: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 and 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek; Sept. 28-Oct. 6 at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, San Francisco; $25-$81; www.smuinballet.org.
DEAR AMY: This summer I left an unhappy but reliable job for a transitional teaching program, I’ve always been interested in teaching but hadn’t pursued it, All summer I was excited and looking forward to being in the classroom, I’ve invested thousands of dollars, my time and my friends’ and family’s support into this pursuit, Three days 50% off us size 6/blue shoe/velvet shoe/gold embroidered designer shoes/blue ballet flats/women shoes/wedding shoes//roya into it, I want out, I came home after the first day and had a terrible panic attack, I almost had to pull over while driving home! The school and the kids are actually pretty nice (I don’t anticipate discipline problems), and the school is fairly supportive, My anxiety wasn’t because of these external things, but rather because I simply don’t seem to like teaching..
My three days haven’t been so terrible, but I have an awful feeling of sadness and disappointment, and the undeniable feeling that I’ve made a big mistake. Generally, I know that you can’t know what you like until you try it, but this seems pretty pathetic of me. Could this feeling be real? A few more days into things, even with better, smoother classes, the feeling has only grown. I feel ashamed, embarrassed and worthless that I am even considering quitting after all of this, not to mention my feeling of obligation to the school and students. Help! I want permission to quit, but I don’t know if I deserve it.
DEAR HELLO, GOODBYE: I give you permission to quit, But … not yet, You “deserve” professional satisfaction, and the children you teach definitely deserve to have a dedicated teacher, Here’s one secret to my own unique career path: I always give myself permission to quit, The thing is, granting myself this permission also helps me to settle down, tackle any anxiety, delay any hurried or panicked response, and make a rational choice, So far, I’ve never quit a job, But 50% off us size 6/blue shoe/velvet shoe/gold embroidered designer shoes/blue ballet flats/women shoes/wedding shoes//roya — for you — quitting might be the most rational choice..
